Medical Scientist - Dr Ong YC

Dr Ong is a medical scientist with 20 years of experience in Science and Medicine. Dr Ong is one of the pioneers in the directed drug therapy of genetic diseases (clinical report published in the Lancet, 1999). He is also the inventor of award-winning Enerbolis (listed in the Master Index of Medical Specialties, 2012; National Trades Union Congress Healthcare Co-operative Best New Product, 2013; National Trades Union Congress Healthcare Co-operative Best Product Award, 2014) and the discoverer of non-steroidal selective androgen receptor modulating (SARM) phytoandrogens (awarded USA patent, 2005).

Molecular, Translational & Clinical Medicine

Dr Ong has authored numerous research and review papers (both scientific and clinical) in medical journals, such as:

  • The Lancet (impact factor 16, top-ranked clinical journal in the world, along with NEJM and JAMA)
  • Annals Academy of Medicine, Singapore
  • Molecular Human Reproduction (impact factor 3, first-ranked journal globally, in the field of Obstetrics & Gynaecology)
  • BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine (impact factor 2.2)
  • Clinical trial reports (ICTR)
  • United States and PCT patents

His research work has also been cited in international medical textbooks - Principles of Molecular Medicine, USA and Oxford Handbook of Clinical Specialties, UK.

Dr Ong has been interviewed on national TV (Channel U and Channel 8) with respect to his medical discoveries and perspectives on metabolic health. His pioneering work has also been featured in the Malay language newspaper (Beritas Harian) in 2007, the English language newspaper (The Straits Times) in 1999 and 2003, and the Chinese language newspapers (LianHe Wanbao, Shin Min Daily News, Wo Bao and Lianhe Zaobao) in 1999, 2003, 2006, 2009, 2010 and 2014. Dr Ong has also been specially featured and interviewed in both Esprit Magazine (Australia) and Prestige Magazine (Singapore) in 2006 and 2008 respectively.

Of note, Dr Ong has developed an integrated preventative and intervention model for:

1) sustained metabolic health (including euglycaemia, homeostatic arterial tension, balanced lipid profile, stable BMI, mental wellbeing, competent tissue repair of musculoskeletal, neurovascular and endocrine systems)

2) advancing best standard-of-care for the metabolic syndrome (endocrine-metabolic disorders such as prediabetes, type 2 diabetes, cholesterol disorders, prehypertension, hypertension, chronic inflammation, PCOS, creeping fat phenomenon and central obesity)

3) disorders caused by hypercalorification, overnutrition and dysnutrition (by clearly delineating functional food classes - the behavioriet for psychological needs, differentiated from the diet for physiological requirements)

The overarching model and associated modalities have been peer-reviewed and published in two books and a key concept paper. It is also recommended by Emeritus Professor (Dr) Marcin Krotkiewski, MD, PhD, a pioneer of the Waist-Hip Ratio (WHR) clinical marker, and Father of the anthropometric definition - Apple and Pear Body Shapes - linked to cardiovascular and stroke risks.

Importantly, both short term (2 weeks to 1 month) and long term (6 months to 3 years) clinical results of the applied metabolic health programme, which included SARM phytoandrogens and polyvalent GLUT-PPAR modulators Enerbolis and ES-TriGUARD respectively, have been published in peer-reviewed European and United States medical journals – European Journal of Nutraceuticals & Functional Foods - AFIHT, Dec 2009; Journal of Diabetes and Metabolism, Oct 2011; Endocrinology and Metabolic Syndrome, Dec 2011.

In Australia, the anti-obesity component (TLR weight management) of Dr Ong's integrative metabolic healthcare model is clinically available through pharmacies, under the Xndo brand. Around the world includng UK and Canada, Nutrafem, a phytopharmaceutical for climacteric vasomotor symptoms developed by Dr Ong (featured on national TV news in 2003), continues to help women in their daily lives.

Dr Ong is studying the clinical synergy between mindfulness-based contemplative therapy integrated with phytoandrogen adjuvant therapy (PAT) and selective nuclear transcription factors modulation, in strengthening metabolic health and cancer management (prevention, efficacy augmentation, post-therapy recovery and remission rate). Contemplative neuroscience, in modern evidence-based clinical medicine, utilises ancient Buddhist mindfulness- and compassion-based meditative practices to promote physical brain health, psychological wellbeing, empathy for all, neuroendocrine, immune and metabolic competencies. Exciting clinical results have emerged from Harvard Medical School, Stanford Medical School and other medical institutes around the world, which are pushing the frontiers of Science and Medicine dramatically forward, in the 21st century.
